Vaccinations for Dogs

There are several types of vaccines for dogs Core Vaccines (recommended for all dogs) and Non Core Vaccines ( recommended on a risk assessment basis). |
Core Vaccines
|
Rabies vaccine which is required by law for all dogs. This vaccine is given between 12 and 16 weeks old and then boostered at 1 year. Additional boosters are given every 3 years.
Distemper Combination Vaccine which includes Distemper virus, Parvovirus, and Parainfluenza virus. This vaccine should be started at 6-8 weeks old and be given every 3-4
weeks until at least 16 weeks old. |
Non Core Vaccinations

Lyme disease vaccine: this vaccine is given as two doses three weeks apart and then boostered every year.
Baordetella vaccine: this vaccine is given at 8-16 weeks old and boostered annually.

Allergic Reactions to Vaccinations
|
A dog's allergic reactions to vaccinations can be mild, moderate or severe. A mild reaction may include symptoms such as fever and loss of appetite. A moderate reaction may include hives, swelling of lips or around eyes or in the neck region.
A severe reaction may include anaphylaxis, vomiting, diarrhea, rapid drop in blood pressure, swelling of airway, seizures or death

Treatment of Allergic Reactions to Vaccinations
|
Mild reactions usually do not require any treatment unless the symptoms persist for more than 24 hours, then you should call your veterinarian. Some moderate symptoms may require an oral antihistamine or an injectable corticosteriod like prednisone by your veterinarian. Severe reactions to vaccinations should be handled immediately be your veterinarian. |
Prevention |
Severe reactions to vaccinations rarely occur and the benefit of vaccinations are more beneficial in most cases. Your veterinarian is the best judge of what vaccinations are best suited for your dog to protect against the diseases in your area. Your veterinarian will keep a record of any adverse reactions to specific vaccinations to help
prevent those vaccinations from being administered to your dog again. |
